MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN, CONFERENCE PLANNING
On behalf of Mr Paul Usoro, SAN, President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the Technical Committee on Conference Planning (TCCP), it is our pleasure to introduce the 59th Annual General Conference of the NBA scheduled to hold from 23rd – 29th August 2019.
The NBA Annual General Conference presents a unique yearly opportunity for legal practitioners to interrogate the very essence of the profession and share latest knowledge and innovative ways of delivering effective solutions to clients and the immediate environment in which we operate.
One of the challenges facing the legal profession today is not just the effect of globalisation and technology but also its attendant disruption in almost every fibre of the society. Artificial intelligence, block chain, financial technology, cloud computing and electronic documentation are a few of the technologies that have directly impacted and would continue to impact the manufacturing and services sector including legal and justice sub-sectors.
The legal practitioner’s task therefore, while appreciating the inevitability of the disruption, is to anticipate the depth of its impact and understand the need for strategic retooling in order to explore the opportunities inherent in the disruption.
The reality of this challenge underscores the imperative for the apt and well-conceived theme for this year’s Annual General Conference: “Facing the Future”. The Conference, drawing from its thematic context, will address the impact of technological innovations and emerging trends in the political, business and professional space on issues around the rule of law, independence of the judiciary, access to justice and protection of fundamental human rights, the economy and how to pilot the present to assure a better and sustainable future. The Conference will also set the stage for a robust conversation on the current legal regulatory environment, lawyers’ response to technology and preparedness to harness these tools for efficient legal services delivery and a technology-driven judiciary.
The 2019 NBA Conference places the NBA Sections and their respective specialist committee sessions at the heart of the conference programme for capacity building. Conferees therefore will have a real opportunity to focus on their areas of interest and benefit from exposure to emerging practice areas to be better equipped and reinforced to “Face the Future”.
The Conference will feature keynote addresses; showcase sessions from world renowned political and business leaders; practice areas training for lawyers; networking; bonding and mentoring opportunities between bar leaders and millennials, amongst other benefits.
With an average of over 11,000 delegates comprised of lawyers, business leaders and a large youth population at the NBA Annual Conferences, the 2019 Conference promises to be impactful offers Conferees rich aquatic and enriching ambience that Lagos provides. The Conference will hold at Eko Hotel and Suites and across designated venues in Victoria Island, from 23rd to 29th August 2019.
In fulfilment of the mandate to deliver a world-class conference, a premium website has been designed and launched to integrate all aspects of the conference (such as registration, payment, enquiries, signposting hotel discounts) and the planned deployment of a mobile application to allow delegates have access to conference information, networking, profiles and real-time updates all on the go. Please visit the website: www.nbaconference.com for early registration and regular updates on conference information.
We look forward to welcoming you to a memorable conference in Lagos – the Centre of Excellence!
