Mamman Lawan is Professor of Law in the Faculty of Law Bayero University Kano. He is currently the Dean of Law. He was Head of Department between 2012 and 2015. He held various other positions in the Faculty such as Admissions Officer, Level Co-ordinator and Faculty Examinations Officer. He has been the Chairman of the University Committee on Examination Misconduct & Leakages since 2014. He was born and brought up in Yusufari, Yobe State.
He graduated from the University of Maiduguri in 1992 and was called to the Bar in 1993. He obtained LLM from the University of Lagos in 1998, LLM and PhD from the University of Warwick, United Kingdom 2003 and 2009 respectively. He was a Law tutor in the Law School of the University of Warwick. He practiced law in Kano at K. T. Turaki & Co. and M. B. Wali & Co. He was Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association Kano Branch 2014-2016. He was NEC Representative of the branch before becoming Chairman.
Prof Mamman Lawan has taught law since 1995. He has taught courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels such as Equity & Trust, Law of Evidence, Islamic Law of Crimes & Tort, Secured Credit Transactions, Law of International Commercial Arbitration and Law and Development.
He is a Member of the Body of Benchers. He was Secretary, Constitution & Electoral Reform Committee between 2016 and 2017. He has been Dispute Resolution Counsellor, Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission since 2013. He served as Consultant, House of Reps. Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution 2012-2014. He also served as Member, NBA Criminal Justice Reform Committee between 2012 and 2014. He has been Editor-in-Chief Kano Bar Journal since 2012.
He was Consultant DFID’s Access to Justice and Justice for All 2004-2005 & 2012-2013, Member, Election Petition Tribunal, Kano State, 2004 – 2005 and Member, Selection Committee, British Chevening Scholarship 2004.
Prof Mamman Lawan is Associate, Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, UK; and he participated in an arbitration at the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA) . He is a member of many associations. He made presentations at several local and international conferences and has published widely in local and international journals.
